He owns a single set of clothing and often sleeps in a storage room — even though millions of dollars pass through his hands annually. But even at 83 and suffering from diabetes, Abdul Sattar Edhi is far too busy caring for the sick, feeding the hungry, burying the dead to think about the comfortable life. His foundation has a fleet of 1,800 ambulances working from 335 welfare centres all over Pakistan and even has air and marine ambulance services. He has free dispenseries as well as free kitchens in 20 cities. The foundation provides free immunisation and free consultancy services well as having two free maternity homes and a nursing training centre. His Foundation has found homes for 21,000 abandoned children. It supplies poor patients with equipment such as oxygen cylenders, wheelchairs, latrine chairs and beds. It runs s a centre for the rehabilithation of drug addicts. Shelters for the mentally retarded, orphans and female victims of domestic violence are found in Karach, Multan, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, and Chitral serveing 7,500 people. He even runs an aniimal shelter. In case of national disasters the Edhi Foundation helps needy people with food, blankets, clothing and household utensils.
Recentlhy Edhi personlly lead a team of 11 doctors with medicines and funds to help battle a malaria epedeimic in the remote village of Granth Balochistan, inhabited by around 2,000 people. Edhi and his team used camels and motorcycles to traverse the mountainous region.
