Jun 11: Despite the Peaceful Assembly Act coming into force, the police had fired three times more tear-gas at participants of Bersih 3.0 rally for electoral reforms last April compared to Bersih 2.0.
In a parliamentary reply, Home minister Hishamuddin Hussein (pic) said 909 tear-smoke shells (TS shells, fired with tear-gas launchers) and 58 tear-smoke grenades (TS grenades, hand thrown) were used at the April 28 rally which saw some 200,000 people in the streets of the capital.
According to Hishamuddin, this cost the treasury RM1.8 million.
Hishamuddin was replying to Batu Gajah member of parliament Fong Po Kuan who queried on the matter.
She had also asked how many policemen violated the standard operating procedures (SOP) during the rally.
But Hishamuddin defended the police action, saying they had acted within their powers in order to prevent the rally from turning violent.
"However, the ministry views the breach of the SOP seriously and two police officers have been charged in court," he added.
