ANKARA – President Abdullah Gül late Friday approved a highly-debated constitutional amendment package allowing women wearing Islamic headscarves at universities, at the same day with Turkish military’s ground operation into northern Iraq.
Gül announced his decision in a written statement and claimed the amendments were not contradicting the constitutional principles. But president also called on the government to take steps to dispel concerns over the impact of the amendment package and to give priority to rights reforms that will boost the country's aspiration to join the European Union.
