When injustice occurs, instability festers

Perak and its Ruler, Sultan Azlan Shah, has truly made history.

Never before in Malaysia has there been such public outpouring of dissatisfaction against a monarch, nor has there ever been such a storm of condemnation for the perceived royal bias towards a political party.

The state - the second largest in Peninsular Malaysia - now has two chief ministers and two administrations - one that is picked by Sultan Azlan and the other by the Perak people.

Said Malaysia’s Human Rights Commission, Suhakam: “It appears that the method adopted in forming the new government for the state of Perak is questionable, consequently so is the legitimacy of the new state government.”

“Suhakam is of the opinion that new elections for the state legislative assembly, in line with the principle of human rights, will resolve the political uncertainty of the state government.”

Said Transparency International Malaysia president Ramon Navaratnam: “There has not been a high enough order of transparency in the entire episode. Hence, the people’s dissatisfaction and unhappiness. This must not be brushed aside, but must be heeded by all, including the Ruler.
