Cops: Foreign prostitutes not victims of human trafficking

KOTA KINABALU: Many foreign women caught for prostitution in Sabah are not victims of human trafficking.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said some turned to vice to support their children after their husbands abandoned them
Police arrested 1,107 people — mostly Filipino, Indonesian and Thai nationals — following raids on 828 suspected prostitution dens, entertainment centres and massage centres between January and March 2009, he told reporters here.
“When we questioned them, none of them told us that they were being exploited by certain groups,” Noor Rashid said.
Those arrested were charged under immigration laws for illegally staying in the state or for contravening conditions of their visit permits.
Noor Rashid said non-governmental organisations such as Tenaganita could contact the police if they had any information about human trafficking activities, especially those involving prostitution… http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/4/22/nation/20090422181653&sec=nation
